JANUARY 5, 1858 --Lincoln writes to Robert Kinzie, of Chicago, regarding the U.S. Circuit Court case of Johnston v. Jones and Marsh. Plaintiff William Johnston is suing William Jones and Sylvester Marsh in a dispute over property rights involving Chicago’s lakeshore. The federal govern-ment cut a channel across the litigants’ lots, an action which resulted in sand washing up along the shoreline and over time creating new land nearly 1,200 feet wide. Lincoln represents Jones and seeks information from Kinzie, who once owned the disputed property and who “laid out the addition” now in question.

Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial

Events are planned throughout Illinois to commemorate Lincoln’s 200th Birthday in February 2009

Superintendent Koch speaking at Lincoln's HomeThe Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission is planning a series of events throughout Illinois to mark the 200th birthday of our 16th President in February. The Illinois State Board of Education will be working with the Commission over the next year to promote student participation in this once-in-a-lifetime event. We are working on projects with several agencies and are providing links to those projects on this website. You can find out about all of the Lincoln Bicentennial events at www.lincoln200.net.

One way for your schools to participate in the Lincoln Bicentennial will be when we ask students who are in school on February 12, 2009, to join in a recitation of the Gettysburg address. About 93 percent of school districts have modifications that would allow students to be in class that day. I would hope that if yours is one of them that you strongly consider including February 12 as a student attendance day this school year. While there are some school districts that do not currently have modifications for school attendance on Lincoln’s Birthday, I would like to remind you that it is not too late to seek one.  Since the State Board of Education approves these modifications of the School Code, they can be requested up until Friday, February 6.  Complete applications that are received at the State Board by February 6 will be approved in time for students to be in attendance at their school on February 12, 2009.  This deadline should allow time this fall for you, your board and your staff to discuss the possibility of participating in this statewide event.  If you have any questions on the waiver process, detailed information is available on our website at http://www.isbe.net/isbewaivers/ or you may contact Rules and Waivers staff at (217) 782-5270.
